About Montagu

Montagu is an historical town with an element of the timeless. Some would say that it is part of the geographic region of the Little Karoo, whilst others argue that it lies at the very entrance. The landscape is definitely suggestive of the Karoo. It is a wonderfully "laid-back" place, nestling in a basin surrounded by majestic mountains.

The town was founded in 1851 on the farm "Uitvlucht". Traditional Cape Dutch thatched-roofed houses were built, using materials transported by ox wagon over Bain's Kloof. Many of these houses have been restored and some are open to visitors. In Long Street alone there are 14 National monuments. Because Montagu is situated in a fertile valley between the Keisie and the Kingna Rivers, the village is periodically "cut off" due to flooding after heavy rains. The disastrous floods in January 1981 caused major damage to vegetation, walks , the Baths at the Hot Springs and many historic homes. Fortunately, the damage has been restored.

Apart from the historic buildings, galleries and the Hot Springs, Montagu is also known for 4 x 4 trials, mountain bike trails, hiking trails, a unique "bird tree" that houses sacred ibises each season, rock climbing, a wildflower nature garden, and many other activities. It is a popular retreat for both the active as well as those who wish to relax and unwind.
